It’s like talking to a ghost with an unfamiliar tone
I’ve barely heard a word from you since you turned 23 years old
And maybe the other men you’ve loved were quick as hell to up and run, but my vessel is built on promises that I can’t let myself go back on
I wanted your storms of rage and hate
Bring me all that you have saved
Come on and scold me, love
Rip me all apart
Who will dig up every note that I left up on all of those peaks and in my head?
I couldn’t place them in your dried up hands
So now I’m questioning what kind of man I am
I wanted your artwork in our home: the a-frame we’d build on our own
The mattresses would line the loft where we’d spend our nights with our heads off
And you could read me off to sleep
We’ll denounce God and misery
We’ll let the fools take those
We’ll keep each other’s bones
I only kept hitting that switch cause I didn’t know how to act
I was barefoot in the darkest room where the floor was made of broken glass
But my ears were listening hard and I was begging for direction
I hadn’t lost my preservation. I just lost all communication
So that room filled up with fires built from the tatters of my sleeve
From when I clawed at it to grasp my heart and place it at your feet
Don’t tell me you don’t see what’s wrong with all the silence that you keep
But I love every flaw in you so come love every shitty part of me
Well you’re my rugged country
I’ll put my head down and just keep moving
The land is so broken and braided but I’ve got years left in this body
And I’ll find within my ribcage the same forces that build up mountains
So I can stand so high upon them
And find the signals you’ve been sending
